A. taxiformis is a highly valued edible marine red alga in Hawaii, Indonesia, China and Korea. This species is used fresh in Hawaii as “limu” (generic name for seaweed) to flavor meat and fish dishes. It is also prized by the Hawaiians for its peppery flavor that only ali`i (Hawaiian royalty) were allowed to eat it.
