C. sertularioides is an edible crop consumed by humans in some parts of the world, namely in the Caribbean and Central America. This alga is consumed in a raw state and as salad. In India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Thailand and Tonga (Pacific Is), this species is used as food; the slightly sour and pungent nature of the young and fresh thalli gives it a spicy taste.
