This species is sold in the markets of Makassar and is used as food in several parts of Malaysia. It is eaten raw as a salad. The alga is used as food in India, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan and on the Hawaiian Is consumed in soups or with soya sauce or vinegar. In Japan, after drying they are preserved in salt; they are prepared for food by boiling or baking in water, and are put in soups; or, after washing, by mixing with soy-bean sauce and vinegar (Smith 1904). In India is consumed as food in the form of salad or adding to soup and dried plants are prepared as tea.
