The thalli of several Dictyota are edible and used in Indonesia (Sulawesi), Malaysia and Thailand. In the Hawaiian Archipelago, D. acutiloba is cultivated in “algal gardens” and sold in local markets. Dictyota is either eaten raw or cooked with coconut milk, pickled or preserved by smoke-drying and is very nutritious. Some Dictyota are known to have a somewhat bitter taste. If you like the bitter flavor and can eat Dictyota raw with vinegar or lemon juice dressing, or cook the fresh plants in stir fry, soup or stew.
