This species is harvested and sold as tasty edible seaweed, used historically by NW indigenous American tribes. It is also cultivated and sold dried throughout Asia as “Sweet Kombu”. H. sessile is considered a tasty kelp that adds flavor, color, and texture to soups, casseroles and many other dishes.
