U. linza is used as an edible seaweed in many cultures for its high nutrient content and silky texture. Used also for making a cooling tea as well as for a vegetable in China; in Japanese and Korean cuisine is used in various seasoning with soy sauce; and has been known for its consumption in Israel. This species is also consumed in N America, and in the Hawaiian Is.
