What are novel and traditional foods?

TFood is a collaborative platform that highlights the traditional use of algae as food outside Europe. From long-standing culinary practices across Asia, Africa, Oceania, and the Americas to lesser-known regional recipes, TFood showcases the cultural richness of algae consumption worldwide. Everyone can contribute, researchers, chefs, producers, and algae enthusiasts alike.

In EU novel food regulations, a “traditional food” refers to foods from outside the EU with a safe, well-documented consumption history of at least 25 years, allowing a simplified notification process.

EABA, within the EU4Algae initiative, is working to provide a list of algae TFood to be added to the EU Novel Food Status Catalogue (NFC).

*Algaeneers are researchers or professionals who work with algae, such as seaweeds or microalgae. They can be students, postdocs, entrepreneurs, or industry experts.

They are interested in algae-based research, development, and innovations.
